Annual CO-CABE Educator & Advocate Awards

Peer Nominated

Candidates must be exceptionally skilled and dedicated bilingual teachers in a bilingual program for pre-kindergarten through grade twelve. Only teachers who work full time with students in a bilingual classroom and have at least three years of experience qualify. Candidates must have distinguished themselves as leaders and outstanding teachers. They should play an active and valuable role in their communities as well as their schools. They should be fully bilingual. The most important qualification to consider is the candidate’s proven ability to inspire emerging bilingual students of various backgrounds and abilities to excel.

Candidates must be exceptionally skilled and dedicated instructional assistants in a bilingual program for pre-kindergarten through grade twelve. Only instructional assistants who work in a bilingual classroom half-time or more with students and have at least three years of experience qualify. Candidates must be bilingual. Candidates must have distinguished themselves as leaders and outstanding assistants. They should play an active and useful role in their communities as well as their schools. The most important qualification to consider is the candidate’s proven ability to inspire emerging bilingual students of various backgrounds to excel.

Peer Nominated

Candidates must be exceptionally skilled and dedicated administrators or school leaders, including coaches, in a bilingual or English language development program from pre-kinder through grade twelve. Only candidates who work full time with students and have at least three years of experience qualify. Candidates must have distinguished themselves as outstanding leaders and advocates for emerging bilingual students and families. They should play an active and valuable role in their communities as well as in their schools. The most important qualification to consider is the candidate’s proven ability to inspire emerging bilingual students of various backgrounds to excel.

Peer Nominated

Candidates must be exceptionally skilled and dedicated educators in a higher education institution that offers undergraduate and/or graduate programs that prepare teacher candidates and/or practicing teachers with a strong emphasis on equity and social justice.  Only educators who have at least three years of experience in higher education qualify. Candidates must have distinguished themselves as outstanding educators and scholars in the field of bilingual education, culturally and linguistically diverse education or a related field as evidenced by the impact of their research, teaching, and/or service on policy and practice that advance equity and excellence in the education of emerging bilingual learners.

Board Nominated

The purpose of the Board Award is to recognize, on behalf of CO-CABE, an individual, group of individuals, or organization for contributions made to the field of Bilingual Education in Colorado. The recipient(s) of the Board Award has(have) demonstrated a strong commitment to advocate for and enhance the development of educational policy and programs that will positively affect learners and communities of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

Peer Nominated

The purpose of the CO-CABE Federico Peña Community Service Award is to honor, on behalf of CO-CABE, an individual, group of individuals, or organization who are making significant contributions to their community through their time, actions, talents and dedication (outside any volunteer work done for their employer) in the field of Bilingual Education. The honoree selected should serve as a role model for compassion, and service and be striving to make the world a better place. He/ she should have a passion for helping others in his/ her community. She/he should demonstrate a strong commitment to advocate for and enhance the development of educational policy and programs that will positively affect learners and communities of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

Any person, persons, or organization whose contributions have been primarily in Colorado shall be eligible for the CO-CABE Federico Peña Community Service Award except that members of the CO-CABE Board shall not be eligible for this award.

The President’s Award is one of the highest honors given by CO-CABE and is surpassed only by the CO-CABE Lifetime Achievement Award in prestige. The purpose of the President’s Award is to recognize an individual, group of individuals, or organization for outstanding contributions made to the field of Bilingual Education in Colorado. The recipient(s) of the President’s Award has taken significant and noteworthy actions that have directly resulted in the development of educational policy and programs that will positively affect learners and communities of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

The President’s Award is granted at the sole discretion of the CO-CABE President in consultation with the CO-CABE Board.
