The Colorado Association for Bilingual Education led the opposition to the anti-bilingual education initiative, Amendment 31, also known as the Unz initiative. The defeat of Amendment 31 was the first defeat of any such initiative in the U.S. and stopped the momentum that had been built by the California software millionaire, Ron Unz. The feat was considered even more remarkable because polls showed that in July 2002, the initiative was supported by 80% of the voters but it was defeated by a vote of 56% to 44% in November of that year.
